Your Storefront Glass Broke After Hours. Here Is What to Do Tonight
A break-in, a vehicle in the entrance, or a pane that finally let go. If you are a business owner reading this at eleven at night, here is the order of operations.
1. People First, Then the Site
Keep everyone away from the opening. Tempered safety glass breaks into small pieces, but the frame will still have shards held in it, and a partly broken pane can let go later without warning. If a pane is cracked but still standing, do not lean anything against it and do not try to push it out.
2. Call the Police If It Was a Break-In
Get a report number. Your insurer will ask for it.
3. Photograph Everything Before You Touch It
Wide shots and close ups. The glass, the frame, the surrounding area, any damage inside. Do this before cleanup, because once it is swept you cannot go back. Insurers assess from photographs far more often than from site visits.
4. Get It Boarded Up
This is the step people delay, and it is the expensive one to delay.
An open storefront overnight is an invitation. Most commercial policies also carry a duty on you to take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, so if a second incident happens through an opening you left unsecured, that conversation with your insurer goes badly.
A proper board-up is cut to fit, fastened to the frame, and sealed well enough to keep weather out. In winter that matters more than people think: an open front with the heat running will empty a space's temperature in an hour, and in an older building that can put pipes at risk.
We keep plywood stocked specifically so board-ups do not have to wait for suppliers to open in the morning. We board up across the GTA 24/7.
5. Call Your Insurer in the Morning, Not Tonight
Unless your policy requires immediate notice, there is nothing a midnight call achieves that a nine o'clock call does not. Have ready: the police report number, your photographs, the approximate dimensions of the glass, and the board-up invoice.
6. Understand What Glass Has to Go Back In
This is where business owners get surprised, so it is worth knowing before the quote arrives.
Commercial entrance and storefront glass is not the same as residential glass. Glass in doors, in panels beside doors, and in large areas at floor level is generally required to be safety glass, which in practice means tempered.
Tempered glass cannot be cut to size after it is made. It is manufactured to exact dimensions and then heat treated, which is what gives it its strength. That means it has to be ordered, and it will not be same day.
That gap between the board-up and the permanent glass is normal, and it is exactly why the board-up has to be done properly rather than quickly.
7. Watch for Frame Damage
Frame damage is the variable that moves a job from straightforward to significant. A vehicle into an entrance almost always bends the frame, and a bent frame has to be repaired or replaced before new glass will sit correctly. Glass installed into a distorted frame sits under stress and does not last.
If the door still operates but feels different, say so when you call. It changes what we bring.
Worth Doing Before Anything Breaks
Photograph and measure your storefront glass now, while it is intact, and keep it with your insurance documents. When a pane breaks at midnight, having the dimensions already written down takes a day off the order.
